Married to a big spender? Here is what you can do.

Are you married to a big spender? Wondering, how i do i budget with my husband? Or how can i get my wife to stick to a budget? Will my husband leave me when he finds out about my spending problem?

There are many people out there in big spender-saver relationships.  One person in a relationship usually spends more money than the other on ‘unnecessary’ stuff.

Those cute kids clothes & shoes online,  the gorgeous purse on “sale”. Those nice pants, lovely top, nice pair of shoes, warm bed sheets, cute summer dress, it never stops. (I’m guilty)

Examples of compulsive shopping include making large sum purchases behind your back, gambling away family savings, has secret maxed out credit cards of hundreds of dollars or unpaid personal loans.

Many people in spender and saver marriages are embarrassed to acknowledge their bad financial habits to them selves, let alone to their significant other.

Many people in spender – saver marriages reveal their spendthrift spouses are really good people who have bad spending habits. The “saver” spouse is willing to salvage their marriage.

To be honest though, your big spender spouse is responsible for their actions/decisions. Unless they want to change their ways, there is nothing much you can do.

Be the supportive spouse, not their parent. Living with a compulsive spender can cause serious mental and physical health issues.

In this post,  you will get tips on what to do when your wife or husband doesn’t know how to stop spending money.

Motivating yоur ѕроuѕe to change their spending hаbіtѕ mау ѕееm like jumping a hugе hurdle, ѕо іt іѕ bеѕt tо tаkе thе рrосеѕѕ in bаbу ѕtерѕ.

Although it can be uncomfortable, the benefits of agreeing on finances together as a couple outweigh the disadvantages.

While working your way towards financial independence, you may come across as too strict or aggressive with your debt plan, letting perfection get in the way of good.

For example you work and your spouse stays at home with the kids, you don’t realize how much it costs for the stay at home parent to run a household i.e buy groceries and children’s clothes.  Sit together and talk about what is reasonable for her/him to live on as a stay at home parent.

Promising review:  My husband and I pondered purchasing the FPU home study for quite a few months before deciding to make the purchase. As a family of 6 and a one income family, it was essential for us to have a plan and have the motivation to stick to it. I first learned about Dave through budget research and purchased Total Money Makeover.

That was an eye opener itself but we needed more. My husband had just graduated from a four year university and I am set to graduate with an associates in just a few short weeks. We have been able to pay off all our credit card debt, we don’t have medical bills or any other debt besides a car loan and the dreaded student loans. By following this FPU dvd plans and lessons, we are set to be completely debt free in about 4 years. We couldn’t be more excited!Tasha .B.

Promising review: My wife and I are less than one month into applying Dave Ramsey’s program, but it has already greatly changed for the better our attitude toward money, debt, and wealth. We enthusiastically look forward to pursuing our new goals. Very highly recommended.John Francis Robin

Sometimes when you and your significant other do not agree on finances, it maybe a marriage problem and not a money problem. You need to address it from that angle.

You need to have a conversation with your spouse along the lines of this is important to me, it is putting a strain on our marriage, and I don’t want it to end our marriage…

Your spouse is going to keep you broke, you will resent them for that. You keep pressuring them about money and in turn they will resent you.

Having joint accounts as ideal for couples that are on the same financial page because it proves trust between the couple.

However in the case of spender vs saver marriages, it might create disharmony.

Each spouse ought to have their own bank account, in their names, the other spouse has no access to it.

Bills are either split in half.  Do not lend your spendthrift spouse money when she/he runs out.

The separate accounts usually create stability for the money savvy spouse, this may in turn”wake up” the big spender spouse.

When the other spouse can not meet their financial obligations, it will be clear to them where they stand.

Sometimes no matter how lovingly you speak, the compulsive spender will not heed.

You have showed your spouse the negative savings, maxed out credit card statements, unpaid personal loans, nothing seems to help.

Many mental health experts believe that compulsive buying disorder can stem from childhood deprivation, perfectionism or reaction to stress, among other things.

It is best to seek spending addiction help from certified professionals.

Relationship experts believe that some financial issues in a relationship/marriage can signal more deeper issues within the marriage.

Your spouse’s response or lack of there of, might be to due bigger underlying issues within the relationship/marriage. Marriage counselling is advised.

Therapy helps the overspending spouse examine “why” and guides them on how to deal with the triggers of overspending.

In your couples budget planner, include fun money for both of you.  It is so nice to “splurge” on something you like without going over the budget.

Fun money for each of you to spend on what you want without guilt, judgement; no questions asked.

Depending on your financial status, some people budget $35 to anywhere around $200 or more.

This money maybe used for among other things; movie tickets, trampoline park activities with the your children, haircuts, mani-pedi, spa treatments, Starbucks for your favorite beverage or clothes etc.

The spouse that does not use their money a particular month, can roll it over to the next month, saving more fun money in the long run.  Again, it is their money, they choose what to do with it.

Sit down with your spouse, have a look at both of your spending habits without judgement.

Tracking expenses will force your spouse to acknowledge their spending.

Before long, spendthrift spouse will start questioning themselves before making any spending decisions.

Use good old excel spreadsheet, google sheets or apps such as Mint, YNAB or everydollar. They have prebuilt in reports making it easier for tracking.

It takes a few minutes each day to log in your daily expenses.

I rесоmmеnd uѕіng envelope cash system.  Sреndіng mоnеу using debit/credit card is easier, since you can’t асtuаllу ѕее the money lеаvіng your hands.

Get an envelope for each expense category. Put the budgeted amount of cash in the envelope.

Almost every day families go over to the Dave Ramsey show to be filmed screaming ” we are debt free”. Others call in to his radio show to do the scream. These families sacrifice  a lot while paying off their consumer, student, and mortgage debt.

These  debt free screams are so motivating and inspirational to many people living with huge debt. that have completely paid off their debt.
